The Utah personal injury lawyers at True North Injury Law want to celebrate students who are critically engaging with the developments that are changing our everyday lives. The True North Injury Law Academic Scholarship represents that desire.
We invite students from all areas of study to apply for the chance to win a $2,500 scholarship from our firm. To apply, students must complete an essay discussing how civil statutes may need to evolve to address accidents caused by self-driving cars, and how manufacturers can make their self-driving vehicles safer on the road.
Students at accredited United States colleges, trade schools, universities, and graduate schools can submit their applications for consideration before May 15, 2027.
Students can apply for the True North Injury Law Academic Scholarship regardless of their major. True North Injury Law only asks that students agree to the scholarship’s terms and conditions and submit proof that they intend to enroll in (or are already enrolled in) an accredited college, university, trade school, or graduate school in the United States.
Applicants should complete their application packets and submit all of the requested materials if they want the scholarship selection committee to consider their work. True North Injury Law cannot accept incomplete scholarship packets.
You can apply for the True North Injury Law Academic Scholarship by submitting the requested essay along with the scholarship form on this page. You should save your scholarship essay as a PDF according to the following naming convention: “[Scholarship Name and Year] - [Student Name].”
Make sure you submit your complete scholarship application by May 15, 2027, or else the scholarship selection committee cannot consider you for the $2,500 award.
Should companies developing and deploying self-driving vehicles receive immunity or other protection from civil liability when their vehicles cause injuries if doing so could encourage the development and adoption of potentially safer technology?
Self-driving vehicles have the potential to change transportation and, if the technology proves safer than human drivers, could eventually prevent injuries and save lives. At the same time, when new technology causes an injury, important questions arise about who should bear the responsibility for the resulting harm.
In an essay of approximately 1,000 words, examine whether manufacturers, developers, or operators of self-driving vehicles should receive immunity or limited protection from civil liability while the technology is being developed and introduced to the public.
